This Week in NIOT | Not in Our Town

This Week in NIOT

It's been a historic and challenging week. The U.S. Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, one of the corner stones of civil rights progress. At the same time, the Court handed down a historic decision allowing gay couples to marry in California.

Here's what we've been doing at NIOT.

Executive Producer Patrice O’Neill attended the National Sheriff’s Association Conference in Charlotte, NC last week and heard Sheriff Ted G. Kamatchus, the Sheriff of Marshall County, IA, share the important work of his community’s Not In Our Town campaign. She also moderated an online film screening of Light in the Darkness with KPBS in San Diego. The screening concluded with a discussion with Detective Ellen Vest of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, San Diego Deputy District Attorney Oscar Garcia, Dr. Danell Scarborough from the San Diego Human Relations Commission, and Chris Saunders from the San Diego Hate Crimes Coalition.

Not In Our School Director Dr. Becki Cohn-Vargas attended the National PTA Annual Conference  in Cincinnati, OH and filmed a Discovery Town Hall meeting with two NIOS student leaders who are now in college. She also recently announced the winners of the UNITED SIKHS and Not In Our Schools Anti-Bullying Video Contest in Fremont, CA.

Community Engagement Director Michelle Gahee Kloss is currently in San Diego, CA for an interview with Detective Ellen Vest and is producing a shoot about the Hate Crimes Unit of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. She also attended the North American South Asian Bar Association’s  (NASABA) conference in San Francisco and sat of a panel with San Francisco District Attorney Victor Hwang to discuss hate crimes. At the conference, she screened a preview clip from our film following the Oak Creek, WI community after the killing of six people in a Sikh temple, and discussed the incident and the community reaction in more detail.

We have recently created a Director of Development position and are currently looking for qualified applicants. See our Jobs page for more information.
