Freelance Grant Writer/ Writer/ Copy Editor 
 
Are you interested in social justice? Creating better communities?
We are looking for a highly skilled freelance Grant Writer/Writer/Copy Editor to work on grants and program materials for Not In Our Town (NIOT). 

NIOT seeks a Grant Writer/ Writer/ Copy Editor to create compelling and persuasive proposals and program materials that support current and new NIOT initiatives. This person will serve as a key member of the staff, and will work closely with the CEO.

Responsibilities: 

- Gain a complete understanding of the mission, vision, programs and services of NIOT to ensure that all proposals written and materials are consistent with its goals and objectives; including working closely with program leadership and staff to develop appropriate and feasible program proposals and materials. 

- Write and edit grant proposals as well as letters of inquiry, applications, progress reports, acknowledgment letters, and other correspondence to prospective and renewing foundations, corporations, and government agencies. 

- Participate in meetings with NIOT staff, funders and Board Members to obtain the information needed to create a competitive proposal. 

- Research and review foundation, corporate, and government grant guidelines to ensure that proposals meet published goals and objectives and comply with application and reporting requirements. 

- Gather and prepare materials to accompany grants, including needs analysis, goals, objectives, timelines, budget narrative, evaluation strategies, and other supporting data. 

- Oversee reporting process for specific grants, including periodic and final stewardship reports and renewal applications submitted to funders. 

- Write and edit materials for NIOT publications and website as needed.

Qualifications: 

- Dedicated and motivated, with a passion for diversity, inclusion and social justice. 
- Outstanding persuasive writing skills as well as ability to clearly articulate complex information and funding priorities.
- Documented success securing funding from foundation, corporate, and government sources including new funders. 
- Working knowledge of research resources for foundation, corporate and government funding sources. 
- Good computer skills and experience with fundraising software.

 Web & Social Media Summer Intern
 

Not In Our Town, an Oakland-based, national media nonprofit that highlights positive community responses to hate crimes, seeks an intern to assist in managing the online tools used by our growing international online network. NIOT.org, which launched in April 2010, extends the documentary work of the 15-year-old organization by highlighting both short films and web stories of communities combating hate, providing resources for communities and schools as well as a space for concerned people to engage. This year, the organization will be launching several exciting initiatives including a robust schools project, new short films, and a PBS broadcast.

This is a wonderful opportunity for a student or recent graduate to get hands-on experience in a position that combines the web, communications and community-building. This internship will provide hands-on experience working with multiple web tools in an office setting.

This position will assist in the following:

 

-Crafting social media posts, monitoring news/blogs to share with our community online 

-Managing our YouTube channel and NIOT.org website and comments

-Creating and managing web forms that allow us to interact with the community 

-Posting blog posts and pages that pertain to the organization and its mission

-Creating regular reports that analyze and strategize web usage

-Data entry on the web

-15-20% general administrative work

 

Qualifications:

 

-Familiarity with Drupal, or other CMS (training will be provided, if necessary)

-Familiarity with social media tools (Facebook, Twitter)

-Detail oriented

-Ability to multitask, be proactive and meet deadlines

-Well-organized, hard-working and able to work independently

 

Students and recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Position will be on-site in our downtown Oakland office which is BART and bus accessible. We would like someone who is available approximately two days a week. Applications accepted on a rolling basis. $75/week transportation allowance.

Not In Our School Intern

Next year, the organization will be launching several exciting initiatives including a robust schools project, new short films, and a PBS broadcast. This is a wonderful opportunity for a student or recent graduate to get hands-on experience in a position that combines journalism, communications, the web and social media in a non-profit setting. 


This position will assist in the following:

-Compiling databases of NIOS contacts
-Managing NIOS's Twitter/Facebook presence
- Promoting NIOS activities at Bay Area Schools
-Meeting with students and campus groups to promote NIOS
-Contacting educators, schools, and college students to expand the NIOS network
-Researching social justice organizations, public media outlets, and bloggers
-Writing for the NIOS web page 
- Reviewing entries to NIOS mini-grants and student contests
-Presenting about NIOS to educators and students in the Bay Area
-15-20% office-wide administrative work



Qualifications:

-Ability to multitask, be proactive and meet deadlines
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Well-organized, hard-working and able to work independently
-Dedicated and motivated, with a passion for outreach, engagement, dialogue, and social justice
-Well-versed in and excited about social media tools
-Interest in education and school issues
