Other

As the centraliowan.com is in its infancy, I look forward to working with others throughout my community toward awareness that it is not acceptable to provoke fear, incite intimidation or belittle any person  regardless of age, location or circumstance. We 'all' matter. - Tammy R. Lawson
Each student in my college level linguistics course becomes the class expert on a particular hate group. The student researches the group thoroughly and analyzes their messages and tactics. Drawing on theories of persuasion and concepts from their study of General Semantics, and referencing two videos: Faces of the Enemy by Sam Keen and Hate.com,  they develop a keen understanding of how each group is able to create and sustain the idea of an other or an enemy, how they recruit and retain members, and how they spread their message. Then each student creates and educational action plan to combat the messages of hate. All of this is shared with our community in an end-of-the-semester symposium. We are in the process of creating a course website to share our research and action plans. When it is finished, I will supply the link.

We have accepted undocumented workers to our worship and listened to their stories.  We have also taught about accepting gay and lesbians to our worship and church and have accepted new members who are gay. We are very strict about not allowing or ignoring hate language in the church, in any program. We are a Christan church but our outreach to the youth respects all religious views.
The Waterloo Police Department and the Black Hawk County Attorney's Office soon came under scrutiny for not labeling the killing a hate crime after witnesses said the assailants called Marcellus a derogatory name relating to sexual orientation as they beat the life out of him. But the refusal of police and prosecutors to do so is par for the course in Iowa where only a handful of criminal incidents each year are ever designated as hate crimes.
