A frightening wave of hatred is washing over our country. People are spitting and screaming racial epithets at our elected officials. African American, Jewish and gay members of Congress are receiving hate messages and pictures of nooses faxed to their offices. Two Congressmembers have had bricks thrown through their office windows, and nearly a dozen others have received serious death threats.

San Francisco, CA: With California in economic crisis, and the state's schools facing a crippling budget crunch, the University of California is in the midst of one of its deepest, most disturbing conflicts over race, tolerance and diversity in recent memory.
The UC system from Davis to San Diego has been rocked by racist, anti-Semitic and anti-gay incidents, creating an atmosphere of fear and distrust. The impact has reverberated nationwide, prompting Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to condemn the "intolerable acts of racism" on UC campuses--harsh words indeed from the state's highest office.
The UC Board of Regents is meeting tomorrow at UC San Francisco to address the situation.

UCSB recently launched their week long “Speak Up Against Hate Campaign” in an effort to raise awareness about hate crimes and incidents.
Organized by theOffice of Judicial Affairs, the week kicked off with a rally in Storke Plaza where students signed pledges to “Speak Up” against hate and shared their own experiences with discrimination.
According to a Student Affairs survey, 173 out of 271 students assessed said they knew a victim of a hate crime or incident. “Though hate crimes/ incidents occur quite often, most are usually not reported for various reasons,”says Doug Wagoner, intern at the Office of Judicial Affairs. “People may not want to make a big deal out of it, or may not know who to turn to.”
