NIOS WORKSHOP OPTIONS 

All schools are different—so NIOS workshops aren’t “one size fits all.” Our team works with you to create specialized trainings for your school, designed especially to address your local issues and needs. NIOS workshops can also be customized for a variety of participants: students, educators, administrators, or multiple groups together.

NIOS also has workshop packages that combine a series of workshops into several days so you can provide professional development to your entire school community.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr. Becki Cohn-Vargas is the director of Not In Our School (NIOS), and brings over 35 of years experience in public education in California. In 2005, she initiated one of the longest-standing NIOS campaigns in Palo Alto Unified School District. Dr. Cohn-Vargas has spoken on the subject of how to combat bullying at conferences, schools, and universities across the United States, and has developed two online NIOS courses on preventing and addressing intolerance.  Her workshops and keynote speeches have motivated students, parents, teachers, and community leaders to be upstanders and take action to create safe and welcoming schools for all students. Dr. Cohn-Vargas is the co-author of Identity Safe Classrooms: Places to Belong and Learn, published by Corwin Press.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Getting Started with a NIOS Anti-Bullying Campaign 

2-hour introductory session designed for site staff or school teams

This two-hour workshop introduces the NIOS resources and tools available on the NIOS website with positive strategies to prevent and respond to bullying and intolerance.

The workshop includes:

  • An overview of state and federal anti-bullying legislation and requirements for schools
  • Basic information about bullying prevention and intervention
  • Methods to address bullying and cyberbullying
  • Effective ways to teach students to be upstanders
  • Introduction to NIOS and NIOS campaigns

Bullying, Intolerance: Not In Our School 

2-day workshop or a series of 4 half-day sessions designed for site staff, teams, or individual teachers or administrators.

This workshop will help site staff or school teams design and prepare to implement a NIOS campaign to address bullying and intolerance on their campus. Participants will actively be guided through a process, working together to create an action plan for instituting their unique localized NIOS campaign. They will be introduced to NIOS resources, films, and lesson guides that will help them unleash creativity and empower student leadership. They will learn strategies for sustaining attitudinal and behavioral changes to reduce all forms of social cruelty and increase kindness and student voice on their campus.

This workshop includes:

  • An overview of different groups of students who are often targets of bullying, students with differences (race, gender, sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation, appearance, and disabilities) and how to facilitate discussions and lead activities aimed to address and reduce stereotypes
  • NIOS tools and models for designing and completing a site needs assessment that meets the anti-bullying legislative requirements and addresses particular issues of bullying and intolerance on campuses/districts
  • Best practices in training staff and students to identify, prevent, and intervene in face-to-face bullying and cyber-bullying situations
  • Strategies for role-playing that help bystanders learn to become upstanders
  • Hands-on work with action plans, learning to create leadership teams by drawing from student and community groups as well as educators

NIOS Trainer-of-Trainers (TOT) Model: Training Leaders to Develop NIOS Anti-Bullying Campaigns 

2- or 3-day customized session designed for school leaders and site teams.

The TOT model is a training for leaders or site teams who plan to return to their sites or districts to implement NIOS programs. This three-day workshop will train leaders and prepare them to help their colleagues institute a comprehensive sustained NIOS campaign to address bullying and intolerance.

Sessions will include a complete overview of NIOS materials, resources and campaign elements featuring best practices from two decades of NIOS initiatives. Workshops will integrate four components:

  1. Information models for addressing bullying and intolerance prevention and intervention
  2. Tools for sustained student-led site-based campaigns to respond to bullying and create safe, inclusive, and accepting environments
  3. NIOS Video Action Kit with films and lesson guides
  4. Models of leadership and training

Models for addressing bullying and intolerance prevention and intervention

Participants will learn about best practices and models for addressing bullying and intolerance at their school sites.

Activities for this component include:

  • Statistics on incidents of bullying and intolerance
  • Social-emotional and academic impact of bullying and cyberbullying
  • Effective research-based models to prevent and respond
  • Supporting the victim
  • Effective methods of intervening for victims and bystanders to become upstanders
  • Supporting behavior transformation for those who bully
  • Targets of bullying and stereotyping
  • Facilitating hard conversations on race, gender, and other forms of intolerance

Effective tools for sustained student-led site-based NIOS campaigns

The workshop will provide models for completing needs assessments that meet the requirements of anti-bullying legislation. Using a template, participants will develop a first draft of a NIOS campaign with tips on how to work with site leadership teams (students, staff and community) to develop it.

Activities for this component include:

  • An overview of anti-bullying legislation
  • Designing a site or district needs assessment
  • Gathering data from student surveys and focus groups discussions
  • Building student leadership groups with a range of social groups represented
  • Supporting and mentoring students groups to take the lead in finding solutions
  • Designing the first draft of a NIOS action plan

Introducing the NIOS Website and Video Action Kit

Participants will be guided through the wealth of resources provided free online and in the NIOS Video Action Kit. These NIOS tools and resources can be used in classrooms, in advisory programs, and as part of NIOS campaigns.

Activities for this component include:

  • Introduction to the NIOS website
  • NIOS films and lesson plans
  • Models for using NIOS resources in classrooms and NIOS campaigns

Models of leadership and training

Participants will be introduced into the role of trainer-of-trainer and receive off-the-shelf resources to provide training in their communities. They will also receive agendas for staff development sessions that can be tailored to site needs.

Activities for this component include:

  • Hands-on work designing a localized NIOS Campaign training session using the NIOS videos and lesson guides
  • Tips for professional development for adults
  • Methods of facilitation and interactive presentation models
  • Using a template, design agendas for NIOS training for their site and/or district

NIOS for Parents: Building Empathy at Home and School 
2-hour session designed for parents and caregivers

NIOS offers an interactive evening session for parents in English or bilingually in Spanish that introduces parents to issues of bullying and intolerance. Parents will have interactive discussions to explore the impact of bullying and stereotyping in their children’s lives and will discuss the importance of building empathy and intercultural understanding in their children. They will also learn ways to support their children and to prevent bullying among siblings and friends at home.

Parents will learn how to partner with schools to foster safe and inclusive environments as well as advocating for their own children.

This workshop includes:

  • Overview of statistics and impact of bullying and intolerance
  • Discussion of effective ways to prevent and address bullying at schools
  • Viewing of NIOS anti-bullying films
  • Ways parents can support their students who are victims, bystanders or perpetrators of bullying at home or in school
  • How to advocate for their children and partner with the school in anti-bullying initiatives

Bilingual sessions include small group activities where parents can hold discussions in Spanish. All new content is provided bilingually. Workshops with translation into other languages can also be arranged.

NIOS offers a comprehensive model for schools that want support for implementing a sustained anti-bullying and intolerance program customized to their specific school environment. Experienced administrators and anti-bullying experts support a site or district teams with a combination of staff workshops and parent education sessions. Student leadership teams will also receive training in finding innovative solutions to site issues. Ongoing coaching will help site leaders implement NIOS campaigns to effectively prevent and address bullying and to create a positive, caring and empathetic environment.
