Leith, ND: You Are Not Alone

No Hate, No Fear, No Violence, Not In Our Town North Dakota

What if hate groups tried to take over your town?

Support the Community of Leith, ND.

Mayor Ryan Schock and five members of the City Council in Leith, ND are trying to figure out how to keep peace and stand up to hate in their small farming community of under 20 people.

The National Socialist Movement, a white supremacist, neo-Nazi organization, is coming to Leith, ND to raise Nazi flags and hold a rally on Sunday. Leaders of this small town in Leith  are urging people to stay away from the hate group. They want people to know they stand firmly against the views of the neo-Nazis.

A white supremacist who has lived in the town for a year and a half has been buying up land in Leith, vowing to create a “white enclave.” Paul Craig Cobb has announced he will turn over some of the 12 plots of land he has purchased in Leith to the National Socialist Movement and to former KKK leader Tom Metzger.  On Monday, the Nationalist Socialist Movement has announced they will be going to the courthouse in Grant County to claim their land.

Please send a message of support to the people in Leith and other North Dakotans  who stand against hate. Here's two things you can do to help.

1. Leave a comment of support below, which we will pass on to Leith

“We need people from across the state to come alongside of us and show support that they don’t believe in what this guy is doing,” Leith City Councilman Lee Cook told the Bismarck Tribune. “There are a lot of people who could speak up. It’s not tricky. Silence, to me, means that whatever he’s doing is OK,” he said.

Dear Citizens of Leith, Here in Oregon the people of John Day turned back a similar effort by Aryan Nations to move in on their town. You have my support in your united effort to resist this takeover of your community by a hate group. Michael Funke Bend, Oregon

Dear citizens of Leith,

I heard about this story on the news, and was extremely aghast to think that such a thing is taking place in the United States in this day and age.  This hatred must stop.  I especially feel for those who are specifically targeted by these hate groups, please know your brothers and sisters throughout the nation are standing with you!!!  These hate groups will not persevere, instead equality and justice will!  Sending you love and prayers!

Citizens of Lieth—please do not underestimate for one minute the importance of your resistance to this evil.  You inspire all of us who seek to protect our communities and our children from those who foster hate and division. We are with you and you are with us.

Your story is being told around the country. People from coast to coast are thinking of you and wondering how they would respond in such a situation. We send our thoughts to you and your neighbors in north dakota as you stand up to this threat to your town.

People across the country will be proudly watching you stand up to hate and racism in Leith. Thank you for speaking up and standing up. And thank you to Not in Our Town for bringing us together.

In my small town in the 1990's, a small group of neo-Nazi's also tried to take over. We did lots of public events and mobilized, and trained people to confront these neo-fascists each and everytime they were seen in public. They were not allowed to be anywhere without a confrontation, sometimes politely, sometimes not. We shared phone numbers and organized phone trees where people could be mobilized instantly, and we got rid of them.

Tom Metzget of White Aryan Resistance (WAR) was also on the fringe of that experiment, he needs to be stopped.

I'm an American now living in Berlin, Germany. People here know why Hitler was allowed to rise to power: because the majority of "good" Germans stood by and watched, and did nothing.

Now we know after WWII what these Nazis have done. If there are people that stand by and do nothing while these fascists organize in the same area, then these do-nothings are just as responsible for what happens. If anyone says "Somebody ought to do something about these neo-nazis,", then hand them a mirror and tell them "This is one of the people that ought to do something about these racists."

In solidarity with you from anti-fascist Berlin, Germany

Jack

Dear Residents of Leith and the People of North Dakota,

The Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations Board of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho stands in solidarity with the good residents of Leith. We praise you for your courageous determination to oppose the message of hate and those who promote white supremacy. You are doing exactly what all communities should do and that is never remain silent in the face of hate.

We have spent 32 years opposing the doctrines and activities of the neo-Nazis and other extreme movements and thus we stand shoulder to shoulder with you and ask all the good people of North Dakota to do the same.

Our prayers are with you.

Dear Members of the Task Force, You have been a leading light for many across the country. Thank you. Patrice from Not In our Town

Sending my support to my neighbors in Leith ND. I am appalled with the plan to overtake your community and establish a neo-Nazi stronghold. I am totally opposed to their violence and hate. Know that you have many friends and supporters to your west. Keep up the good fight.

"Ain't No Time To Hate

Barely Time To Wait..."

Standing with you, fellow North Dakotans!  No room for Nazis in North Dakota; our fathers fought and died to defeat these people in Europe a generation ago, remember?  We stood then in Normandy, Bastogne, The Rhine and other places against this stupidity and ignorance. And shall again.

Thank you for standing up to hate and staying strong. I'm sorry you're forced to deal with this invasion, but you're doing beautifully as true Americans. God bless you all!

. . . for standing up against the hatemongers. People from all over the world are supporting you on this.

Hello, Leith - The people of rural Grant County, Oregon, stood up for civil rights and racial and religious tolerance in the face of white supremacist movement a couple of years ago. We understand all too well the fear and concern you are facing today. Please stand firm for diversity and the right to define your own community's character - It will make you stronger. The hate-mongers will tell you they have the right to their opinions, and that is true - but they don't have a right to oppress the vulnerable in your community, to break laws, or to make you conform to their beliefs. Many people here and across the country stand with you!

Thank you from all of us in the rest of the U.S. for standing against this evil. By your conviction & resolve, you truly are standing up for all of your fellow Americans ... and we're grateful to you. Thank you so much!

There is room for everything in this world except hate.

I am sending my encouragement and support.  You are not alone. May your hearts stay strong.

We are there with you! There are many many of us here in NoDak standing with you as you fight back against the filth that is trying to blow into your town. YOU are NOT alone!!! If there is ANYTHING i can help you with i WILL be there helping. There IS contact between you and yours in Leith & those of us also in NoDak and WE ARE working to help you!!! Stand strong, we support you!!

SO NOT LET EVIL SUCCEED. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

To the Residents of Leith and North Dakota, I commend you on your stance against hate and intolerance. Our society could learn a lesson from the good people of your community. That lesson is that there is enough hate in the world. It will only stop when sensible people stand up and say they've had enough! I and many others from around the US stand with you in solidarity.

We stand in solidarity with you, and offer prayers that you will be successful in your efforts to stop white supremacists from over taking your lttle town.

Thank you for showing the world that it is possible to stand agaist hate and racism.  You are not alone.

Dear Residents of Leith, It is so difficult to endure such hate.  I encourage you to continue taking a peaceful stand against those who preach hate.  Your voice makes a huge difference to others outside your county and to the neighbors who have to live next to the vulgar messages.  Thank you for confronting hate in a non-violent way.

Having grown up in Germany two generations after the Holocaust I did not move to America to see misguided supremacists.

This country was founded for freedom, democracy, and human rights. It is barely a generation ago that people here could not use the same bus or university because of racist laws and practice.

I stand with all who say No to racism, hate, and intolerance.

Dear citizens of Leith:

My deepest condolences that you are currently experiencing an influx of hateful folks who want to change your town into a paradise for ignorance. Unfortunately, villains in real life rarely have adequate resources to construct undersea "legions of doom" or any other place that would remove them from the rest of polite society.

Sending you lots of hugs from my family and friends.

I live in Couer d alene, Idaho and very much have lived through out community being brought to bad public eye from Butler and the White Supremacists. We rallied as a community and able to fight them off and win. It was very scary and traveling around the country hearing the negative it was bad. Luckily our community rallied and helped develop programs and training for rest of the country. We are here for you and unfortunately you are a small community but no one wants them to win. Hang in there look at Coeur d alene for going through this. This was in our local paper and shows that now they keeping moving to other states and towns. Kootenai County is with you as is Idaho.
