National Coffee with a Cop in Canton, MI. |
National Coffee with a Cop Day was held on Friday, October 7th. Throughout the nation, police officers and the community members they serve together came together–over coffee–to discuss issues and learn more about each other.
The mission of Coffee with a Cop is to break down the barriers between police officers and the people they serve and build trust between the community and police officers. They get to know each other and discover mutual goals for the communities they live in and serve.
National Coffee with a Cop events were hosted in all of the police districts of San Francisco by the San Francisco Police Department. |
It all started in Hawthorne, California in 2011 when the Hawthorne Police Department brainstormed on ways to get to know their community better. And what better way to get to know and interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day than over a cup of coffee.
In recognition of National Coffee with a Cop Day, a request was sent out to the Not In Our Town Law Enforcement Leaders Network to report back on planned events in their communities. The response was incredible - many agencies throughout the country participated in the national effort to promote conversation and dialogue between police officers and their communities. Here are just a few of the many examples throughout the country.
