San Francisco rightly prides itself as a city that stands up forcefully against bigotry, prejudice and hate-based violence. Now there is a new social media tool that can help us take that struggle to a higher level.
Please join Not In Our Town and The San Francisco Interfaith Council on Jan.11, 2010 at the San Francisco Public Library to learn about NIOT.org, a powerful new interactive Web site that will allow people around the country see what others are doing to prevent hate violence and promote diversity, share their own stories and model best practices.
Not In Our Town Executive Producer Patrice O'Neill will present a short film, introduce the new Web site and lead a discussion about how we might use this new tool most effectively in our efforts to build up the Bay Area as a place where no one need fear prejudice or violence based on race, ethnicity, faith, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or any other real or perceived difference.
Not In Our Town began in 1995 with a PBS documentary that told the story of Billings, Montana, a small city that joined together to respond to a series of hate crimes. This simple, powerful story struck a chord with audiences, creating a model that inspired people in hundreds of schools and communities around the country to create their own campaigns against intolerance.
The Jan. 11 program will be held from 10am-noon in the Koret Auditorium at the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin St. at Grove. The event is free, refreshments will be served from 10-10:30am, and the program begins promptly at 10:30.
