Athens, OH: Library "Not In Our Town" Film Screening Series

A series of documentary screenings and public discussions related to “hate on our lives” and “ways we can respond” is planned throughout Athens County over the next few months.
The first of these events is planned for Wednesday evening at the Athens Public Library. Similar discussions will be held at the other libraries around the county:
Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. — Wells (Albany) Public Library
Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. — Coolville Public Library
Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. — Nelsonville Public Library
Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. — Glouster Public Library
These events are centered around the “Not In Our Town” documentary from 1995. This film showcases the response of Billings, Montana residents when confronted by white supremacists in their town.
Attendees will watch the film and then join in a public discussion on related subjects.
The events are free to attend and refreshments will be served. Along with the Athens County Public Libraries system, other sponsors include the League of Women Voters of Athens County, SURJ of Southeast Ohio, the Athens City Community Relations Commission, Athens Friends Meeting, United Campus Ministry and Messenger sister newspaper The Athens News.

In an ongoing effort to reduce intolerance and promote peace, the Troy Area Interfaith Group, the Troy Police Department and the Know Your Neighbor Daily initiative will present the annual “Not In Our Town” video screenings and discussion.
The event will place 7-8:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Troy Police Department, 500 W. Big Beaver Road.
The documentaries feature a community grappling with a suspected hate crime after an African-American family’s home was set on fire; college students peacefully confronting old divisions and the Ku Klux Klan; students’ responses to anti-Semitic attacks on a college campus; and students’ responses to bullying in their high school.
Troy Police Chief Frank Nastasi and Rabbi Aura Ahuvia, of Congregation Shir Tikvah, will provide some commentary from their perspectives.

Join Building Bridges in Brookhaven for our Third Annual Martin Luther King Holiday remembrance. This year will be a three-hour teach-in to learn about:
--Dr. King’s other dream, his ultimate vision of the “Beloved Community”
--His 1968 Poor People’s Campaign designed to make that vision a reality (interrupted by his death 50 years ago)
--The National Campaign’s recent revival--how it is similar and how it is different
--2019 Plans for the Poor People’s campaign in New York State
--How you can become involved locally on Long Island and help build this moral movement
