Arlington, VA: A Virginia legislator introduces a bill to make attacks on the homeless a hate crime in his state. A similar initiative is underway in Florida, which leads the nation in attacks on homeless people.

 
Nelsonville, OH: Hocking College in southeastern Ohio vows to remain open despite graffiti threatening that African American students would be killed on Feb. 2.
 
St. Cloud, MN: Muslims protest “weak response” to anti-Islamic graffiti, which they fear will lead to bias attacks, but police and prosecutors say their hands are tied because Minnesota has no hate crime legislation.
 
Las Vegas, NV: Parents of Las Vegas schoolchildren claim a teacher’s denial of the Holocaust is leading to anti-Semitic threats against Jewish students.
 
Washington, DC: Students at Georgetown University plan a “no hate week” for spring following attacks against the local LGBT community.
 
Buffalo, NY: Woman confesses to brutal New Year’s Eve attack on lesbian, but in a reverse of their earlier decision to investigate the attack as a hate crime, police now believe the victim's sexual orientation  was not a motive.
 
Phoenix, AZ: Thousands march in Phoenix  to protest Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s controversial treatment of Latino immigrants; meanwhile, a Mexican government official complains publicly about the rising number of hate crimes against Hispanics in the United States.
 
Ukiah, CA: Police in Mendocino County, Calif., charge man with a hate crime following his assault on two convenience store employees of Pakistani heritage; it was the second time Muslim employees at the truck stop had been attacked.
 
Ft. Lauderdale, FL: South Florida police charge couple with a hate crime for their alleged assaults on a gay neighbor.
